Triplet Warm Up Exercise

This is an exercise shown to me by drummer Danny Whelchel.

In example 1a, the hands play alternating single, double, and triple strokes with each hand.
Start slowly and concentrate on making each stroke sound even.
After you have internalized the pattern, play this faster.
Eventually you will need to bounce the notes after each double and triple stroke.

Exercise 1b is a variation I came up with that is essentially the same sticking, but reversing the pattern.

Exercise 2 is the same as exercise 1a, except now there are three groups of four strokes added in the second measure.
The first time around it begins with a right hand lead, the second time around it has a left hand lead.

Pete-Zambique

This is a beat that was inspired by the Mozambique rhythm. The Mozambique was created by the great timbale player Manny O'Quendo and popularized for drumset by Steve Gadd. These examples are written in 2/3 clave.

Example 1. This is the traditional bell pattern played with the right hand and the left hand plays clave.

Example 2. Bell pattern, clave and the bass drum plays the "ands" of two. This is great for locking in with the bassist's tumbao.

Example3. Here is the classic Mozambique pattern for drumset.

Example 4. This is my own variation, where the left hand doubles the notes of the 'three" side of the clave on the toms.

Example 5. This is the whole two bar phrase.
